Advertising Poster Stamp

Poster stamp advertising the Union Theater Lichtspiele of Dresden, Germany, a movie theater.
    According to Wikipedia:

The Union-Theater-Lichtspiele (UT-Kino/Union-Theater or Union-Lichtspiele) was a movie theater at Waisenhausstraße 21-22 in Dresden, which was built in 1911 by Martin Pietzsch in the style of reform architecture . When it was built, it was the largest cinema in Dresden and the first cinema with a horseshoe-shaped floor plan and dynamic light architecture.

Martin Pietzsch, a representative of reform architecture, built this cinema palace in 1911. From 1930 to February 4, 1945, the house was managed by Max Plötner. Slightly damaged in the air raids on Dresden on February 13, 1945, the intention was to expand the ruins of the UT cinema into a large cinema. However, this was rejected by the central planning office and the district council. The movie theater was named as one of twelve objects for the large-area clearance in the months of March to December 1950. 300 tons of scrap and 200 tons of useful iron were to be recovered. In 1954, the Dresden city planning office referred to the fact that "professional groups" were of the opinion that investments in the ruins were not economically viable. In 1964 the building was demolished.

Seven wide double doors led to the auditorium. The entrance area was "crowned with translucent colored glass panels illuminated by light bulbs on both sides." The auditorium had stalls and tiers, similar to a theatre. 750 seats were in the stalls and 250 seats in the tier and in proscenium boxes. The chairs were black with light green overlays. 200 pendulums made of light bulbs  - green in color - illuminated the tier boxes. The plan was horseshoe shaped and dynamic. 14 slender pillars (“shafts”) were arranged in a horseshoe shape according to the ground plan. In the middle of the pillars were light bands hung with gold beads. The light bands formed a light capital at the top of the pillars. The green lights on the tier boxes and the gold-colored lights on the pillars resulted in an “electric splay of light in green and gold." The green and gold color scheme of the light fittings harmonized with the black, green and gold color scheme of the hall. The piers supported a ceiling that was 10 m high and had "rich lines". Three surrounding light strands made of 600 light bulbs covered with glass beads were integrated into the ceiling and created an extraordinary space and light experience. Particularly noteworthy was the "smooth, stepped" proscenium frame and the fact that there was no decoration at all. Only the geometrical, crystal-like plaster, similar to stalactites, gave the wall surface a structure.
Propaganda Stuttgart was an advertising firm that used very sophisticated artwork in their advertising in the pre-WWI era, and published many poster stamps. In his catalog of the top 20 graphic artists Charles Kiddle documents over 100 different stamps produced by the firm. Many of them were produced by staff artists at the firm and not attributed to a specific artist.

This stamp is listed in Charles Kiddle's "Poster Stamps - The 'Top Twenty' Graphic Artists", as # PR1.34 (Rarity 50).

After 35+ years I decided to retire from being an active Cinderella Stamp dealer. Most of my working inventory plus backup stock was sold at public auction. However, I have retained some material that I will be offering for sale. In addition, I have some "new" material that was mixed into lots I have bought for my own collections. I will be listing some of the material in my eBay store at fixed prices. I will also be offering some material at auction, either as single items or mixed lots. There will be many bargains available. There will be large and small lots, some containing similar material, some containing a random mixture, and some containing only one or a few items. The condition will be mixed, but none of the lots will be just accumulations of damaged or faulty stamps (unless specifically listed as such).

Items in stockpage or larger lots may be removed and repackaged into glassines to save on shipping costs.

A Note about Poster Stamps and Gum: Because many poster stamp collectors are primarily interested in the image on the stamp, the absence or presence of gum on the back is of little concern. If no mention of gum is made, then there may or may not be gum present. If you are only interested in poster stamps with original gum, please inquire before bidding. Actual condition issues (that are not apparent from the scan) WILL be described.

A Note about "Stock Images": Occasionally I will have more than one example of an item in inventory. Rather than scan each one individually, I may use the same image for multiple examples of the item. If that is the case, the item supplied will be in substantially the same, or better, condition than the image. Any such items will have the words: "STOCK IMAGE" at the end of the description.
