DESCRIPTION

This was an extremely popular work, running countless editions. It emulated publications from the era which it concerns, with the publisher Thomas Longman producing a new font at the Chiswick Press. Published anonymously, it was debated as to whether it was genuine or fictitious, with some immediately content that it was authentic. In the third edition of 1873, however, the publishers and author confessed that the author 'personates' a lady of the seventeenth century in the work.

The work is credited with the revival of the Caslon font.

Written by Hannah Mary Rathbone, best known for this work which was originally published anonymously.

With two leaves loosely inserted regarding the typeset, Caslon Old Face. This includes the title page and first leaf from this page in facsimile, as well as a description of the font.

Acquired from the sale of Paul Gallico's library. Paul Gallico was an American novelist best known for 'The Snow Goose' and 'The Poseidon Adventure'.
