Weathered Nepalese bell
Its handle is Vajra shaped.
Like the singing bowl, the temple bell is the result of traditional manufacturing based on the use of the seven essential metals.
Gold, tin, silver, iron, mercury, lead and copper.
Boasting a beautiful crystal-clear sound.
With the dorje, the bell forms an inseparable couple, an image of "interdependent opposites".
Held together, they show the union of knowledge and skillful means, which is essential to gain enlightenment.
The vajra is a symbol of compassion and represents the masculine pole.
The bell symbolizes knowledge (of emptiness) and represents the feminine pole
The most ordinary and the most complex symbol of Buddhism which expresses the indissoluble alliance of the method
(the means) and wisdom.
In the right hand of the practitioner, lightning is a guarantee of stability of the method,
and in his left hand the bell is a reminder of wisdom.
The bell or drîlbu plays both the role of opposite and complement in this symbol of knowledge.
It is the sound par excellence, its crystalline ringing which goes out as soon as it is produced, a reminder that everything is ephemeral.
