Muhammad Tawfiq Pasha (Arabic توفيق, DMG Taufīq; Turkish Tevfik Paşa; * 15. November 1852 in Cairo; † 7 January 1892 in Helwan) was Khedive of Egypt from 1879 to 1892. Tawfiq was born in 1852, the eldest son of Ismail Pasha. In February 1879, after the violent overthrow of the government of Nubar Pasha, he briefly assumed the presidency in Egypt in a new cabinet and, after his father was deposed on 26 April 1879, June 1879 the government in Egypt. The nationalist Urabi movement developed in 1881 against the international financial controls imposed on the country by Ismail. This turned against the dominant European influence and the autocratic government of the Khedives. Tawfiq turned to Britain, which occupied Egypt in 1882 and crushed the movement. The country remained occupied even after the movement was crushed. British rule in Egypt was represented by the Consul General, who, as advisor to the Khedive, was the actual ruler of the country.
