Description: Hardcover. Oblong small quarto (about 10" x 8"). Yellow textured cloth, decorated in five colors, in a brass clasped binding. Covers evenly dust-soiled, about a dozen samples (of 34 total) with varying degrees of partial soiling/discoloration, and some young person has used a few of the samples (or their versos) to write some rather illegible diary notes. Sound. Overall, a little less than very good. Very good-.

A truly wonderful trade catalog/sample book for this New York-based book cloth manufacturer. Upon first glance, it's a little hard to tell just what is being sold here, as there is a dapper golfer on the cover. However, it's clear that the samples are for book cloth, and are simply inspired by the sport of golf and golf fashions of the period. The first 21 samples are all named "Golf ___," either followed by a color shade or by a number (i. e. "Golf 43" or "Golf Ruby"). The final thirteen samples are all in the same shade of green, and differ in their texture (or "pattern"). These include "Vellum," "Pattern Golf," and a number of less-creative names.

A truly delightful sample book, drawn from genuine inspiration. We could find nothing in OCLC related to this company, nor naturally any separately listed for this or any similar sample book. As such, a significant piece of American book manufacturing history, worthy of preservation despite its handful of soiled samples.
