These highly fragrant cedar trees are drought tolerant, frost resistant, and easy to care for. These long-lived trees will grow to 500-1,000 years old and grow 1-2 ft per year. L. decurrens boast dark green foliage and grow tall and narrow. They typically grow to a 30 ft height and 15 ft wide and stay at this height and width for many years. However, the oldest Cali Incense Cedar trees can reach heights of 150 ft.

California Incense cedar is the preferred choice tree for making cedar oil and smudge sticks. It is a natural air purifier. The oils in the tree perfume the air very well. When planted in mass the strong cedar scent of these trees can spread for miles outdoors (throughout an entire neighborhood). Unlike other fast-growing cedar trees, this one can stand some water and moisture without root rot. Once established, the root system is very hardy and strong. It is another great choice for a wind-break or a natural privacy screen.

How to Care for California Incense Cedar Trees
Mulching is recommended. These trees are perfect for low maintenance growers. Water when the soil is dry (Watering only 2 times a week is fine). Grows in any soil type as long as there is adequate drainage. Remove dead branches. Prune in winter if a shorter, denser tree is desired. When pruning, take care to not remove more than 1/3 of the tree at a time.

Germination Procedure: First, soak seeds in a glass of water for 24 hrs. Next, cold stratify seeds in the freezer for 2 months prior to sowing. Sow seeds no more than a quarter-inch depth. Keep seeds and soil moist during the germination phase.
