Tobacco Snuff Box Rat Tail 18th Century.

This snuff box is very typical of the French Alps folk art. But I am not sure if it’s origin. This box is decorated on one side. The lid fits nicely and snugly. Do look at last pictures, it looks like a critter tried to get inside the snuff box, once upon a time.

In the mountains, in very harsh winters, the ladies would make these finely carved snuff boxes.

A tiny leather tie on the lid gives this characteristic "rat tail" snuff its name.

This is a beautiful example with beautiful decorative markings.
