40 lessons complete on two cassettes

The Living Language Course uses the natural method of language learning. You learn

Italian the way you learned English-by hearing the language and repeating what you heard.

You didn't begin by studying grammar; you first learned how to say things, how words are

arranged, and only when you knew the language pretty well did you begin to study grammar.

This course teaches you Italian the same way. Hear it, say it, absorb it as the result of use and

repetition. The only difference is that in this course the basic elements of the language have

been carefully selected and condensed into 40 short lessons. When you have finished these les-

sons you will have a good working knowledge of the language. If you apply yourself you can

master this course and learn to speak Italian in a few weeks.

You can study the grammar if you like-a brief but complete summary of Italian grammar

is included in the back of this book to enable you to perfect your knowledge of Italian. There

are also many other supplementary aids--vocabulary helps, practice exercises, etc. Most important

of all is the Common Usage Dictionary. This is included in the course primarily for use as a

reference book, but it is a good idea to do as much browsing in it as possible. It contains the

commonest Italian words with their meanings illustrated by everyday sentences. The basic words

-the words which you should learn from the start-are capitalized to make them easy to find.

All the material is presented in order of importance. When you reach page 40, you may

not have learned more than 300 Italian sentences, but they will be the most important 300.

You may not have a thorough knowledge of the language when you reach page 80, but you

will be able to make yourself understood on most important topics. By the time you have fin-

ished this course you will have sufficient command of Italian to get along in all ordinary

situations.

Keep practicing your Italian as much as possible. Once you are well along in the course

try reading Italian magazines, newspapers and books. Use your Italian whenever you get a

chance-with Italian speaking friends, with the waiter at the Italian restaurant, with other

students.

This course tries to make the learning of Italian as easy and pleasant as possible, but a

certain amount of application is necessary. The records and books which make up this course

provide you with all the material you need; the instructions on the next page tell you exactly

what to do. The rest is up to you.
