VEE-JAY
R&B DOO-WOP R&R BLUES LP set: 45 ROCKIN’ ROLLERS “as advertised on TV”
Vee-Jay
released this LP telemarketing package of 1950s-‘60s hits from Vee-Jay and
several other labels, entitled “45 of the Greatest Rock’n Roll 45s” on the
front and “45 Rockin’ Rollers” on the back and on the labels. The advertised set
contained three different 12-inch LPs but this set has two copies of Volume I
and one copy of Volume II.
Discographcal
note: the matrix numbers on Volumes I & II run from RRS-6839 to RRS-6842.
This may stand for Randy’s Record Shop, one of the biggest mail order record operations
in the country, famous for its ads on WLAC Radio and maybe Randy’s was trying
TV ads (in 1968, if the matrix numbers indicate that). Here’s a confusing name
game: Randy’s, in Gallatin, Tennessee, was owned by Randy Wood, who also
founded Dot Records. Vee-Jay in Chicago (and later L.A.) had an employee named
Randy Wood who became head of the company for a few years until he left in
1966, but these were two different Randy Woods.
