Antique French armoire top pelmet, fronton d'armoire. Original, old varnished mahogany finish re-presented with the addition of Grand Illusions authentic chalk paint, peinture du lait. Late 19th c. 

This elegant recent arrival comes to us via a reliable French dealer based in Normandy. Although sourced in its original, dark mahogany state, its elegant hand-crafted carving has since been embellished with the addition of a more contemporary colour palette of putty. 

Emulating the buttermilk paints of the 18th c., and perhaps better known today as chalk paint, these eco-friendly water-based paints contain some 46% chalk. This chalky, matt, breathable finish, produced by Grand Illusions Ltd., considered perfect for ageing and distressing furniture. This fronton having been painted in PASTILLE.

19th c. frontons of this type are increasingly being transformed for the 21st c., adding a French chateau, architecturally sculpted look to spaces above doorways and windows. As demonstrated in the boutique hotel, Les Bois Flottais in Le Bois-Plage-en Re on Ile de Re. IMAGE 10.
