In 1966, The Beatles departed from their earlier records and pushed the boundaries of rock and pop music by releasing their innovative and seminal album Revolver.

Capturing The Beatles' new direction, and visually representing their sound, Klaus Voormann's Revolver cover artwork became instantly iconic. It went on to win the Grammy Award for Best Cover – Graphic Arts on 2nd March 1967 – the first time for a rock and pop album.

Now, Voormann is working with Genesis Publications on a limited, Grammy Anniversary edition of a book he has created, entitled REVOLVER 50. Including new artwork, photos, and introductions by Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, the book offers a fascinating insight into the making of the legendary cover artwork. The commemorative REVOLVER 50: The Grammy Anniversary Edition is limited to only 500 copies. Each book comes with a signed original drawing by the artist; a one-of-a-kind artwork, from a selection Voormann has curated exclusively for this anniversary edition, as well as a special Grammy Anniversary 12-page commemorative booklet.

'In the end, the Revolver cover was a classic and this book is another.' Paul McCartney

THE ARTWORK

REVOLVER 50: BIRTH OF AN ICON

The Grammy Anniversary limited edition of REVOLVER 50 will come with an original, unique piece of artwork from Klaus Voormann. The drawings for the Deluxe and Collector copies are exclusively made available for Genesis readers.

'I opened my graphical 'treasure box' and made 500 original drawings available for the Grammy Anniversary edition of my book. Each Collector and Deluxe copy is unique and makes you the owner of an original Klaus Voormann artwork.'  Klaus Voormann

Chosen from Voormann's archive from the REVOLVER 50 graphic novel, each of these artworks forms a vignette from the story of Revolver's creation, and the artist's journey to create the cover design. This is a valuable opportunity to acquire a piece of the Revolver narrative, as well as a beautiful piece of art.

THE MANUSCRIPT

REVOLVER 50: BIRTH OF AN ICON

In REVOLVER 50, the story of the album cover is recounted in the style of a graphic novel drawn by Voormann.

Telling the story of his first encounter with The Beatles in Hamburg, his visits to Abbey Road to listen to Revolver during the album's production, and the ultimate reaction of the band to his artwork, as well as the enduring impact it had on album cover design.

Additionally, there is a Foreword from Paul McCartney, and an introductory letter from Ringo Starr, reminiscing about the making of Revolver and the album cover. This is accompanied by introductions by Mike D'Abo of Manfred Mann, and Professor Lawrence Zeegen, Dean of the School of Design at Ravensbourne.

'Thanks for sending me the proof of your REVOLVER book - it brought back such great memories - even farther back than Revolver - to when you used to share an apartment with George and I in Whaddon House in London.'  Ringo Starr

'A pair of scissors lying there, a knife or a pencil or a brush, all of these things you actually use when you are at the table working on a piece.' Klaus Voorman

CREATING THE COLLAGE

REVOLVER 50

Inspired by his original artwork and by the tools that he used to make it, Klaus Voormann has created 250 original artworks that are immediately recognisable as the Revolver cover in progress.

Voormann has gone through an extensive creative process to produce each artwork. By drawing, individually painting and then cutting out each of the artists' tools in a variety of materials, selecting photographic elements of The Beatles that echo the original record cover, and placing them thoughtfully on the print, Voormann has taken great care to create 250 one-off pieces to allow each buyer to own an original Revolver artwork.

'I am a graphic designer and whatever is necessary to get the message across, that's what I am going to use and that's why I picked the collage.' Klaus Voormann

An Evening with Klaus Voormann at the GRAMMY Museum

10 Mar 2017

On Tuesday night a special event was held at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles celebrating the 50th anniversary of Klaus Voormann’s Revolver Grammy Award.

The evening with Voormann saw him speaking to Scott Goldman, Vice President of the Grammy Foundation, about his life as a graphic artist, the creation of the Revolver artwork and his collaboration with the Beatles. He showed excerpts from his limited edition book, REVOLVER 50 and shared anecdotes from his time working with The Beatles. He also spoke about his passion and career in music.

Voormann gave an exclusive preview of his new handcrafted art collages - mixed media pieces inspired by the award-winning Revolver cover - which are exclusively available from Genesis Publications.

ITEM 4:  THE BEATLES 1966 REVOLVER RECORD STORE

DISPLAY.  I purchased this item directly from Julien's Auctions,

from whom the Confirmation of Authenticity is issued.  USED

CONDITION.

EXTREMELY RARE:

An easel-backed card stock in-store shop display from the 1960s used to promote the release of The Beatles album Revolver. With the exception of posters, it was highly unusual for EMI to produce promotional material for any of The Beatles releases, particularly in the mid to latter part of the group’s career, because of their immense popularity. The standee is an enlarged image of the front of the UK mono vinyl LP sleeve. It was originally on display in 1966 at Beatties department store in Wolverhampton, England. Shortly after the album’s release, customer David Tonks walked into Beatties to purchase a copy of Revolver. At the same time he spotted the Revolver display and asked if the store would save it for him. Tonks was told that the standee had already been promised to someone else; however, that person failed to show and staff gave Tonks the display after the promotional period was over. His name is written on the reverse of the display.

Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest

Albums of All Time

No. 11

500 albums beatles revolver

Apple, 1966

Revolver was the sound of the Beatles fully embracing the recording studio as a sonic canvas, free to pursue musical ideas and possibilities that would reshape rock forever. It speaks volumes that the first song the band worked on upon entering Abbey Road studios in April 1966 would have been impossible to replicate live — a swirl of hazy guitar, backward tape loops, kaleidoscopic drum tumble, and John Lennon’s voice recorded to sound like “the Dalai Lama singing from the highest mountaintop.” They titled it “The Void” and later renamed it “Tomorrow Never Knows.” “I was wondering how George Martin would take it,” Paul McCartney later recalled. Martin’s response: “Jolly interesting.”

The Beatles’ lives were changing too: Lennon had taken LSD at this point, George Harrison was deepening his interest in Eastern mysticism, and McCartney was getting into avant-garde composition. All those influences came through here.

Revolver wasn’t totally without precedent. The Beatles’ previous album, Rubber Soul [see No. 35], had a similar experimental introspect. Harrison once said Rubber Soul and Revolver “could be volume one and volume two.” But no band, including the Beatles, had tried anything like McCartney’s strikingly mature art song “Eleanor Rigby,” Lennon’s trippy tape-loop swirl “I’m Only Sleeping,” or Harrison’s “Taxman,” with its cutting groove and lyrics that took shots at British politicians.

It made sense that the disappointing live shows the band played in the summer of 1966 would be their last. By the time Revolver came out, they’d already entered another world.
