SPLINT MARKET BASKET BLUES & NATURAL WHITE WOOD HANDMADE 1980s OVAL RECTANGULAR.

I bought this basket at a festival in Kansas but I no longer have the artist’s card and it’s not signed. I know that it is artisan handmade in the United States. The splint natural wood used is either white oak or pine. The dyed blue pieces woven with the various widths and the types of splints used give this basket such a unique appearance. The handle is tall, rounded and sturdy. The basket is oval and the base is rectangular. Although basket itself doesn’t even weigh a pound, I used it hard and carried heavy papers in it for years. It amazes me how something so intricate and lightweight can handle such a load and maintain its shape and strength. That means it is well made and high quality! Dimensions are in item specifics. Depth of basket inside is 7.5 inches.

The blue splint on top of the handle has some fading from sunlight. Some fraying on one side where handle connects to basket, however handle itself is firmly attached and strong. Photos of these issues are clear so please study them and ask questions. Some of the techniques used to construct this piece include coiling around top rim of basket and plaiting on the base.

Although basket is lightweight, it will need packing materials inside and around it and boxed well to ensure safety when shipped, so it will be a large package sent via USPS Ground Advantage.
