MCM VINTAGE ODD CAT WITH BLUE YARN BALL, PORCELAIN HAND-PAINTED FIGURINE, MADE IN GERMANY, 1950s. So aloof and regal, this feline could even be a lion cub, although I doubt they play with yarn!

Rare and hard to find, this cat has a unique presence. When displayed, it grabs a viewer’s attention with white spiky eyebrows, intent black eyes and distinctly painted paws. Although one paw is on a ball, something tells me this little guy is no kitty cat when it comes to playing! I’ve done hours of research trying for a more complete identification. The closest I can find is that this piece is created in a similar method of painting on the underglaze and overglaze as porcelain figurines from Wagner & Apel Porzellan in the Thuringia, Lippelsdorf area in Germany. Its base is 4” x 3.5” and is 5” tall.

There is definite crazing on this piece, SEE PHOTOS. But it doesn’t detract from its beauty—from a few feet away, the crazing isn’t noticeable. The best thing the kitty’s new owner can do is not display in direct sunlight and keep in a temperate environment—with no extreme heat or cold to prevent more crazing. There are no chips, cracks or repairs. The base may have been covered with velvet or felt, although there are zero traces of that. A few inches inside the cub is a sharp piece of porcelain that the cub was born with in the kiln. It is not something to touch. IT IS SHARP.
