*Vasilopitta is a traditional cake/pie made to be portined in the New Year's eve among the family members and the quests of the house into which a gold/silver or regular coin is placed .It is supposed to bring good luck all the year around to the person who finds it in his piece. The story of this tradition is said to be as follows:In Central Asia Minor in the Period of Ottoman empire there were many Christians who lived in the area of Capadocia . Those times the soultan placed a tax to all Christians where they had to give all the gold they had to the government. After the gold was collected in a few days the soultan dies , the changes which come makes this gold unnecessary. So the new ruler decides to return the gold to the people. But there was no record to as who gave what. So the priest of the community (Aghios Vasillis or Santa Claus) gave an idea which was accepted. The gold pieces will be placed in small pieces of cakes and will be distributed back to the people in random.According to the myth although cakes were randomly distributed , every owner to his surprise found his own item in this piece of cake. Probabaly timewise this might have been close to the end of the year. From those years on it was good luck to receive the  coin placed in the Vasilopitta named after Saint Vasillis. It was sliced to the name of Christ , the name of the family members and others .Nowadays there are Vasilopitta coins made by the producers of Vasilopittas with the advert of their company. Some used to have a new coin each year with the date of the arriving year .Some avoided the year part to avoid coins left over. Families now usually place a regular coin in the home made pittas. Sometimes even a gold coin if available .In company celebrations the vasilopitta coin corresponds usually a gift of money corresponding as value near to the value of a gold coin to the employee that finds the coin in his slice.
