Jordan Schlanger Frosted Quartz Petite 'Pear' Pendant, Hand-Carved Stone, Rare

It looks like we're down to the very last of these hand-carved stone pendants.

A Trove of these semiprecious stone pendants in the three iconic shapes had turned up in various natural stones & sizes, suspended from braided pendant cord. I have left some sweet, petite examples of the group, mostly in this Frosted Rock Crystal.

I love frosted Quartz Crystal for the way it captures light & bounces it around within the softened, frosted surface. It's forever glowing in different ways depending how the light enters. The effect is difficult to photograph with the equipment I have available. The glowing effect is enhanced if you rub a little mineral oil into the surface from time to time.

It's an elegant treatment of an elemental mineral, very cleansing, subtle, neutral yet magical. Natural Clear Quartz, even in these very clean examples, always has a bit of life to it, being usually not perfectly clear. Its slight inclusions, various impurities, subtle shading & myriad natural tones add to its magic.

Quartz is a very hard mineral (7 on the Mohs Hardness Scale), just behind Topaz (8), Ruby & Sapphire (9) & Diamond (10). These pendants took diligence to carve.

This shape, the 'Pear' as it became to be known, is actually more of a petal-shape. It was part of a series of signature elemental spirit-shapes, a recurring theme, reinterpreted in silver, pave diamonds on gold, & carved in semiprecious gems & stones: The Flame, the Orb & the Pear.

All the sleek, sculptural forms in this series feature the signature connection to the cord were notches carved strategically carved & recessed to seat the cord so it's flush with the surface.

About Quartz:

  • So many of our favorite gemstones are actually varieties of Quartz: amethyst, Citrine, Tiger's Eye, Onyx, Jasper, Carnelian, Chalcedony & others.
  • Quartz is found regularly in passage tomb cemeteries in Europe in a burial context, such as Newgrange or Carrowmore in Ireland. It is identified as the mystical substance Maban in Australian Aboriginal mythology. Quartz was also used in Prehistoric Ireland, as well as many other countries, for stone tools; both vein quartz and rock crystal were knapped as part of the lithic technology of the prehistoric peoples.
  • In Europe and the Middle East the different varieties of quartz were the most commonly used for the various types of jewelry and hardstone carving, including engraved gems and cameo gems, rock crystal vases, and extravagant vessels. The tradition continued to produce objects that were very highly valued until the mid-19th century.
  • The Ancient Japanese believed quartz formed from the breath of a white dragon, and regarded it as representing perfection.
  • Quartz crystal is considered a power stone that's prized as a healing stone. It is said to be the most powerful healing stone of the mineral kingdom, able to work on any condition. It has been called the "Universal Crystal"
  • Quartz crystals have piezoelectric properties; they develop an electric potential. An early use of this property of quartz crystals was in phonograph pickups. One of the most common piezoelectric uses of quartz today is as a crystal oscillator. The quartz clock is a familiar device using the mineral.
  • The name quartz comes from the Saxon word querklufterz which meant cross vein ore. (mineralminers.com)

Dimensions: This petite pendant is nearly 7/8" high by about 5/8" wide.

The cord is left extra-long so you can knot it at your perfect length. These pendants look great layered at different lengths, combining gems for unique, flexible looks.

This piece is from the archives, a sample-line item from a classic set of signature objects rarely seen. The piece is 'new old stock', it has never been worn, but may have small signs of handling in a showroom setting. It's in near perfect shape.

I presently have a few of the Frosted Quartz Petite Pear pendant. It doesn't have it's price tag, but these would've been marked at $100 c.2008 (about $141 today), as they were custom-cut & not an available form.

This listing is for the Frosted Quartz Pear 9inverted teardrop shape) Pendant featured in the first photos. The related items shown in the latter photos are for reference &/or listed separately.

You'll likely never find another of these.
