The original Olympic bronze medal was awarded to third place finishers at the 1920 Antwerp Olympic Games. Only 400 examples of this medal were made. This medal comes from the collection of the French nobleman Marquis Jean d'Aulan (1900-1944), an archetype of the wealthy sportsman of the early 20th century. university swimming champion; European champion in high diving 1930; competitor in bobsleigh at the 1925 Winter Olympics in Chamonix; 4-time French bobsleigh champion; Auto race Le Mans 24 Hours 1930 and several major international rallies with his Bugatti 1930-1936. He did not win an Olympic medal himself, but did have a collection of winners' medals from 1912-1924. It can be assumed that he bought these medals from Olympic champions, because he had no function in a sports organization that would have given him access to medals that had not been issued. He was probably one of the first real collectors of Olympic medals. His Olympic collection was auctioned in France in 2015.
