Florence Mary Anderson
(1893–1972), widely known as Molly MacArthur, was an English stage designer, artist, book illustrator, wood engraver and children's author. Most of her illustration work dates from between 1914 and 1930. Her work for the theatre (always as Molly MacArthur) began in 1923 after which she worked there continuously until 1958.

She was born in Chelsea, London, on 27 October 1893, the second child of the Liberal MP William MacArthur and Florence Creemer (nee Clarke). She trained at the Westminster School of Art and was registered as a student in 1915. She married James Sinclair Standish Anderson on 15 February 1917, but appears to have used his name professionally from at least 1914.
Only Florence Anderson's early work was influenced by the British school of Fairy Art, because ?with maturity, came confidence and an awareness of the exciting possibilities to exploit bold, black and white linear pattern. She became an exponent of the woodcut, examples of which appear in her later books.? She painted a series of postcards for Mansell, but was best known at that period as an illustrator in watercolour of children's books and annuals. Her first major commission appears to have been an extensive suite of colour illustrations prepared for Lady Margaret Sackville's The Dream Pedlar, published in 1914. Anderson received further substantial commissions throughout the decade that followed. She illustrated at least thirty books between 1914 and 1935
Anderson also contributed to nursery comics like Little Folks and Tiny Tots as well as Cassell's Children's Annual and Cassell's Family Magazine.
She had always used the name Molly MacArthur for her monotone woodcut illustrations, quite different in tone and style to the ?Fairy? art created under the name Anderson, but early in the 1920s she reverted permanently to her maiden name and moved into theatrical design
