Emil E. Hurja, was in
Franklin D. Roosevelt’s inner circle of advisers and at one time Executive
Chairman of the Democratic National Committee and a personal friend of
Postmaster General James A. Farley. He was the first person to use
scientific polling to predict election outcomes and was featured on the March
2, 1936 cover of TIME magazine. Hurja wrote a book entitled Westward
Ho, Fare Paid, and was publisher of the news weekly Pathfinder.
A biography about him was written by Melvin Holli, published in 2002,
entitled The Wizard of Washington, ISBN:
978-0-312-29395-6. Another book, by Mary E. Stuckey, Voting
Deliberatively: FDR and the 1936 Presidential Campaign, ISBN: 978-0-271-06647-9,
was just published recently. It discusses Hurja’s role in the early FDR
administration.
We will be listing several
other covers addressed to Mr. Hurja.
