Very Rare, Very Early Native American or Western Frontiersman Rawhide Leather Canteen or Water Carrier

DESCRIPTION: Scans show it all.....very nice, very rare, and very early antique item. Given the excellent rawhide & leather handwork it appears to be native American or Western related. It appears to be a canteen with the leather covering intended to keep the water cool.

Has a rawhide leather covering over a metal canteen-shaped cylinder as shown. RAWHIDE IS NICELY PUNCHED & STITCHED. Clearly done & remains perfectly intact. Tapered spout that extends from the cylindrical vessel is small diameter, about 1/2" diameter at the base, and long, measuring 2 1/4" long. Still could easily enable drinking from it. The end of the tube is open and would enable drinking from it.  Excellent condition cover for the age, complete with original laces, and rawhide work, etc. 

Also has handmade metal loops on the back under the leather, for a cord to be attached.

Could also have been something made by a western cavalry soldier or frontiersman as a water bottle.

Measures roughly 6" diameter and roughly 2" thick. Flat on the back, and convex shaped on the front. This is a great piece to add to any Native American or antique cavalry or western collection. I have never seen anything like this!!

As nice and unusual an example as you will find.  A couple of very old wear spots on the rawhide leather cover, but otherwise in excellent condition. Nice old appearance, even brown color, and patina.
