SERIES DESCRIPTION: Animal-themed series by the firm of John Hall of Tunstall, Staffordshire, in dark blue. The design is one of the most-ornate in the Blue-and-White Transferware canon, with a central scene that features an animal in an interesting setting, the size and detail of which depends on the size and shape of the piece. Surrounding the central animal (on all but the smallest pieces) are scroll-framed cartouches in a wide border, each of which features an individual animal different from the central animal and from one another - the mix of animals is different for the different pieces in the series, and that is part of what gives this series both its variety and its charm. These border medallions are separated by vase-and-flower motifs. Not all of pieces are marked. Where there are marks, they are printed in blue in the form of a cartouche bearing the name of the series: "Quadrupeds"; and some marks feature the name "I. Hall". Geoffrey Godden states in Encyclopedia of British Pottery & Porcelain Marks that this mark was in use from 1814 to 1822, so the series was originally designed and produced during this early period. Production probably continued into the 1822-1832 era when Ralph Hall was successor firm to John Hall. The design is unmistakable - there's nothing else like it, and the best examples are brilliant in tone and finish.
