The top plate screws onto bottom and oval with cross-bar where handle attaches; You pull up on a wood knob to release the handle. The Mechanism is stamped "43" and attached with screws to the arched wood Handle.

in 1871, she introduced a SAD Iron with a detachable, wooden handle. This invention was a big hit with housewives because it was invented by a woman and was widely marketed in magazines and five-and-dime stores in the growing post Civil War era.
