Windward Away is the long-awaited new release from acclaimed Scottish Folk patriarch Archie Fisher, his first new studio recording in 20 years that not only presents his up-to-date material, but also includes 8 bonus tracks intended for a 1980 release that never was issued.

A haunting collection of introspective ballads invoking the wild and rough beauty of the Scottish Border country, with songs of sea and land, love and loneliness, Windward Away is Fisher's masterwork from a career stretching back to the early 1960s.

The story of the album starts in the mid-1990s, when Archie toured the U.S. The late founder of Red House Records, Bob Feldman, was an immense fan - their meeting resulted in the label's 1995 release of Sunsets I've Galloped Into, Fisher's 1988 recording never distributed in America. Feldman also signed Fisher to Red House for a new recording.

Archie went into the studio soon after, but writing and production was slow, seemingly unfinished to Fisher's liking.

The protracted birth of Windward Away took a piece of musical archeology to complete the picture. While moving his Edinburgh studio, engineer Neil Ross came across a safety copy of an album Archie recorded for Tommy Makem and Liam Clancy's Blackbird label in the 1970s. Blackbird folded before the 1980 release date and the album subsequently never left storage. Fast forward to 2008 when a package arrives in Fisher's mailbox: a recording and note from Ross asking, "is this the missing master?" Thus the fitting notation of the final 8 tunes as "The Missing Master." Many of these "bonus tracks" were later rerecorded and issued (some only as live performances), yet these original versions take on a wonderfully fresh air being backed by orchestra and string section. To many Archie Fisher fans, they will prove the definitive versions.

REVIEW
Fisher's quietly poetic ballads haunt like a shadowy specter. -- St. Paul Pioneer Press

FROM THE ARTIST
The blend of 19 traditional and contemporary tracks now seems like a backdrop to a large section of my life not only for the material but also for the musicians who played on the sessions. Songs are like friends, they revive memories of times and places. They come and go and it's always good to meet up again.

Albums are often referred to as a snapshot of musical time, but this one is more of a 5-reeler, given it took so many years to complete. Circumstances and other distractions of life got in the way and I must express my thanks and amazement at the patience shown by my engineer Roy Ashby and the encouragement and support of the late Bob Feldman and latterly Eric Peltoniemi at Red House Records. Hopefully, like me, the songs are a little older and wiser.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
An avid horseman and master guitarist, singer and songwriter, Archie Fisher is Scotland's foremost troubadour and is known throughout the country as the host of BBC Radio Scotland's award-winning "Traveling Folk" show, which he has been presenting for over 25 years. Recognized for his contributions to Scottish folk music, he was inducted into the Scots Traditional Hall of Fame and in 2006 was awarded an MBE (Member of British Empire), a prestigious honor nominated by his peers and bestowed by Queen Elizabeth.

Archie was born October 23rd, 1939 in Glasgow into a large singing family, which yielded three professional singers - Archie and his sisters Ray and Cilla Fisher. Constant music combined with his father's appreciation of many musical styles proved to be a heavy influence on Archie's music while his mother, a native Gaelic speaker from the Outer Hebrides, was a strong influence on the lyrical quality of his songwriting.

Archie first became interested in folk music through the Skiffle era of the 1950s, under the influences of performers such as Lonnie Donegan and Johnny Duncan. Later, the recording of The Weavers at Carnegie Hall also had a profound effect on his approach to music and his political outlook. During the TV folk boom of the 1960-70s, he appeared regularly with his younger sister Ray in magazine programs and the BBC Hootenanny series. He was based in Edinburgh at the time in the contemporary company of musicians such as Robin Williamson, Clive Palmer and Mike Heron (who together formed The Incredible String Band) and was an early guitar colleague of Bert Jansch.

Archie's first self-titled album was recorded in 1968. During the mid-1970s, he formed a long-termed partnership with musician Allan Barty, which later grafted onto the revived pairing of Tommy Makem and Liam Clancy. As well as performing as a backing musician and arranger for Makem and Clancy, he produced a series of albums with them. Fisher also produced albums for the dynamic Scottish band Silly Wizard.

During the 1980s he turned his attention to freelance radio work and originated several series of documentary programs with his local station Radio Tweed. 1983 saw the birth of his "Traveling Folk" radio program, which continues today, nationally broadcast on BBC Scotland.

The 80s also had Fisher return to the recording studio during what he describes as one of his most creative songwriting periods. He began a partnership with Canadian songwriter Garnet Rogers, they toured North America together, and Garnet produced Archie's highly acclaimed Sunsets I've Galloped Into. Red House Records eventually released this in the US (1995) and Fisher toured America and Canada with John Renbourn and Bert Jansch following it's success.

Signed to Red House Records in the mid-90s, Fisher started work on Windward Away, which took over a decade to complete. The 2008 release includes 8 tracks comprising a 1980 "lost album" which resurfaced in a studio move, resulting in Windward Away being a distillation of some 28 years of songwriting.
