Born in Kazanka (Orenburg province) 1869.
Studied in the icon-painting studio of St.Panteleimon monastery on Mount Athos, Greece (where he lived as a lay brother) 1885-91 and at the Imperial Academy of Arts 1892-99. Active in St.Peterburg 1890s; in Moscow 1990-c. 1918 (in addition, visited Paris 1906 and spent time intermittently on his estate near Ryazan); in Ryazan c. 1918-1920; in Moscow 1920-22. Emigrated 1922 via Riga; sailed in Paris; moved later to Nice (France). Member of the World of Art; of the Union of Russian Artists from 1903. Specialized in a portraits; painted dynamic, decorative images of Russian peasant women. Well-known works include  "The Whirlwind" (1906; Tretyakov Gallery) and others. Taught at the Moscow  Free Art Studios c.1918 and at the Ryazan Free Art Studios 1919. Became an academician 1906. One of the most brilliant early century painters. After emigration he incensed the Soviet authorities by producing caricatures of Lenin. Died in Brussels 1940.
