ITEM DESCRIPTION:

Here is an Absolutely Beautiful & Ultra-Rare Antique 1905 Chromolithograph From The 19th C. Classic German Grimms’ Fairy Tales Collection, That Depicts the Well-Known European Fairy Tale Story of the Little Brother & Little Sister Cursed by Their Evil Stepmother The Witch, And Includes Spells, A Royal Wedding & Baby, Murder, Ghosts, Deception, Resurrection & Broken Spells, Justice and Finally Happiness Ever After, titled, “Brüderchen und Schwesterchen” (Translates from German: “Little Brother and Little Sister” AKA “Little Sister and Little Brother” or simply “Brother and Sister”), after the original illustration by the famous listed painter, illustrator & graphic artist, ‘Paul Hey’ (German, 1867-1952), whose printed signature appears middle-right in image area (on stone block near pillar).

History of the Fairy Tale & Synopsis: The classic fairytale story, “Brüderchen und Schwesterchen” dates back to the 17th century with its first recorded appearance in Giambattista Basile's Pentamerone. It was written down as the tale of “Ninnillo and Nennella.” Since then, it has circulated in a number of European countries under varying titles, but with most of the main story intact. In Russia the story was more commonly known as Sister Alionushka, Brother Ivanushka A shorter version of the tale was published by the Brothers Grimm in the first edition of Kinder-und Hausmärchen in 1812, then substantially expanded and revised in the second edition (1819). Their version is based on the account of the German storyteller Marie Hassenpflug (1788–1856). At times, Brother and Sister has been confused with Hansel and Gretel, which has also been known under the alternate title of, Little Brother and Little Sister. The Grimms selected Hansel and Gretel for the tale by that name, and kept the Brother and Sister title for this tale. Some publications of the Hansel and Gretel tale still use the Little Brother and Little Sister title, causing confusion for readers.

Synopsis of “Brüderchen und Schwesterchen”

Tired of the cruel mistreatment they endure from their stepmother, who is an evil witch, a brother and sister run away from home, wander off into the countryside, and spend the night in the woods. By morning, the boy is thirsty, so the children go looking for a spring of clear water. However, their stepmother has already discovered their escape and has bewitched all the springs in the forest. The boy is about to drink from one, when his sister hears how its rushing sound says, “whoever drinks from me will become a tiger.”

Desperately, the girl begs her brother not to drink from the spring, lest he transformed into a tiger and attacked her. So, they continue on their way, but when they come to the second spring, the girl hears it say, “whoever drinks from me will become wolf.” Again, she desperately tries to prevent her brother from drinking from it. Reluctantly, he eventually agrees to her pleas but insists he drink from the next spring they encounter. And so they arrive at the third spring, and the girl overhears the rushing water cry, “whoever drinks from me will become a deer.” But, before she could stop her brother, he has already drunk from it, and turned into a deer.

As the initial feeling of despair passes, the children decide to live in the woods forever. The girl takes care of her brother and ties her gold chain around his neck. They go to live in a little house deep within the woods and live there happily for some years, until they are disturbed one day by a hunting party and the king himself who has followed the strange deer home. Upon seeing the beautiful girl, he immediately asks her to marry him and she accepts. Thus, she becomes queen and they all live happily in the king's castle. Time passes and the queen gives birth to a son.

The witch, however, soon discovers that they are still alive, and plots against them. One night, she kills the queen and replaces her with her own disfigured daughter, whom she has transformed to a physical copy of her. When the queen's ghost secretly visits her baby's bedside for three consecutive nights, the king catches on and her stepmother’s evil plan is exposed.

The queen comes back to life when the king embraces her, and her stepfamily are tried for their crimes. The witch’s daughter is banished into the woods where she is eaten by wild animals, and the wicked stepmother herself is burned at the stake. At the exact moment of the witch’s death, the deer becomes human again, and at long last the family is reunited, and they lived happily ever after. (Source: Wikipedia)

Publisher & Print Info: Though the publisher’s info is not printed on this particular Chromolitho, it was published by the famous German publisher, Meinhold Verlagsgesellschaft, Dresden (German Publisher, 1777-1946 [AKA C.C. Meinhold & Söhne, Dresden or simply Meinhold & Söhne]), which was part of their series of large 4-color chromolithographs after Paul Hey’s and other artists’ fairy tale illustrations called, “Meinholds Märchenwandbilder” (“Meinhold’s Fairy Tale Wall Pictures” [Murals]) first published beginning in 1904, each 105 x 75cm (about 41.33” x 29.52”). Paul Hey’s illustrations were numbered from 7-28, ours being Nr. 17 in the series (AKA: Meinholds Marchenbild Nr. 17 Brüderchen u. Schwesterchen). The publishing company stated about their forthcoming series of fairy tale pictures for 1904: “Meinholds Märchenbilder für Schule und Haus zur Förderung der ästhetischen Erziehung der Jugend” which translates: “Meinhold's fairy tale pictures for school and house to promote the aesthetic education of young people,” and were illustrated “with simple, plain means that children can understand.” The first Chromolitho in 1904 was “Little Red Riding Hood” (“Rotkäppchen” [some sources say 1903]) illustrated by the well-known painter & illustrator, J. Felix Elßner (German, 1866-1945), and the rest of the series followed with artists like Karl Wagner (German, 1864-1939), Wilhelm Claudius (German, 1854-1942), Emilie Mediz-Pelikan (Austrian, 1861-1908) and of course Paul Hey, whose illustrations were published beginning in 1904, with our Chromolitho being from 1905. Many of the Chromolithographs were mounted by the publisher & sold as hanging/roll-down wallcharts for use in schools and other educational settings (bars at top & bottom) or eyelets inserted at the top for hanging, but ours is loose and has never been mounted or framed. The company also sold postcards of the fairy tale series and advertising stamps (where advertisers could print their messages in the gray field) as well. Our Chromolitho sums up the storyline of the fairy tale with the large main color image (upper-middle) of the young sister taking care of her brother who was turned into a deer by their evil stepmother the witch, and hiding from her at their little cottage in the woods, and it features five smaller vignette images (2 monochromatic & 3 color), to include: Evil stepmother (Upper-right) cursing the children at left; The brother & sister looking back at their evil stepmother (upper-left); The sister on horseback with brother/deer at her side, and the young king who finds her and asks her to marry him (lower-left); The king witnessing the ghost of his wife (lower-middle)—who was killed by the stepmother & exact likeness replaced with her disfigured daughter—who visits their newborn son with her brother/deer for 3 consecutive nights; And then the king with his queen who comes back to life and is reunited with her brother in human form (lower-right) after the spell is broken, and the implied scenario of the evil step-mother who is then taken away by the red-hooded executioner and put to death while her imposter daughter was banished to the woods to be eaten by wild animals and then the king, queen & her brother all living happily ever after... The Chromolitho is on a nice heavier weight smooth coated ivory-colored wove paper stock and the publisher info may have been either trimmed off by the publisher or dealer before it was sold, or maybe in preparation to be framed, but never was framed, and what’s neat, is that you can see the printing registration dots in the top & bottom middle outer border area.

Size & Condition: The size with small margins is 41-1/4” x 28-3/4”, Image size is 38-3/8” x 26-7/8”. The Chromolitho is in Excellent Rare+ condition for its antique age with absolutely no color fade—gorgeous rich color & tones! This Chromolitho has been tucked away in our archive amongst other prints & lithos since it was purchased by the Meibohm family and hasn’t seen the light of day in all this time—it’s as beautiful as the day it was printed and is as ‘Mint’ as any collector could hope to find in its original never-framed condition. No foxing evident from front, but there is minimal & very faint foxing barely noticeable on the back mostly around the outer edge areas. There are some various colored printing ink-offset specks & tiny lines, done at the time of printing, scattered here & there on the sheet which are basically only lightly noticeable in the small outer margin areas and are completely negligible and not even worth mentioning since the outer margins can easily be trimmed off or matted & framed out. There are eight tiny tears along the outer margin areas and 2 tiny paper-loss pieces (only 1 tear barely enters image area), and the tears are all repaired from behind with archival tape for protection and most could easily be matted & framed out, and are as follows (going clockwise from upper right corner): 1 tiny 1/8” x 5/16” corner tip missing; 7/8” tear upper-right in corner area with a small associated rectangle paper-loss chunk (3/16” x 9-16”); 1-5/8” tear middle-right which enters the small light-brown border and barely touches the inner image area of stone wall; 1/8” tear bottom edge far-left near corner; 1/16” tear bottom edge in left corner; 1/2” tear left edge lower-left near corner; 1/2” & also 1/16” tears left edge middle; 1/16” tear left edge upper-middle; and 1/8” tear top edge middle-left. Minimal slight & small crescent-creasing scattered here & there in the image area, which are hardly noticeable from the front (mostly lightly noticeable from the back) and aren’t really even worth mentioning either. Other light creasing scattered here & there in the outer margin areas, along some outer margin edges & the outer margin corners with associated dog-ear creasing, and a little more-pronounced creasing along the bottom outer margin edge, as well as slight outer margin edge-wear with some dents & dings here & there—all of which, as previously mentioned, are completely negligible since the outer margins can easily be trimmed off or matted & framed out. Negligible/minimal toning of the stock from age, which isn’t really noticeable especially amidst the ivory color of the paper stock itself. This beautiful antique fairy tale chromolitho has never been framed which is always more desirable to collectors since it has never been exposed to older non-archival materials, matburn or lightfade. What a Beauty!!!
