Description:
This is a fine example of an antique George II Welsh dresser base, constructed of solid oak, displaying a rich colour, circa 1750, in excellent original condition.  Originating from a country house near Colwyn Bay, North Wales, the Welsh dresser base comprises a two-plank top, above a row of three working drawers, with a faux bank of vertical drawers in the centre, flanked by two large arcadian fielded panel cupboard doors.  Elegant quarter columns to the front confers of the Welsh dresser base, with inset side panels.  The drawers and doors retain the original brass swan neck handles, knobs and escutcheons.  The left-hand drawer and cupboard door feature a working steel lever lock (with key). The drawers retain the original drawer linings with butt joints.  Inside the cupboard below, is a central dividing wall, with a narrow upper shelf.  The cupboard doors are decorated with elegant inset moulded arcadian rectangular panels. It is nice to see that this dresser retains all its original brassware; often they were replaced. The back of the Welsh dresser base retains its original backboards and floor.  The dresser stands on the original stile block feet, decorated with shaped ogee brackets to the front and rear.  It is an extremely solid piece of furniture.

This Welsh dresser base boasts its original polish and patination, displaying a mellow golden-brown oak colour, which has been created from nearly 300 years of care.  This Welsh low dresser sideboard is an excellent investment as it is so practical and would look superb in a variety of rooms from the kitchen, hall way or the living room, offering plenty of useful storage space. This dresser base would certainly grace any home.

Condition Report:
This is a fine example of an antique George II Welsh dresser base, constructed of solid oak, displaying a rich colour, circa 1760, in excellent original condition.  Nominal old use marks to the top and leading edges (see photos), but nothing significant considering the age of this 250+ year low dresser.  The drawers and doors retain the original brass swan neck handles, knobs and escutcheons.  The left-hand drawer and cupboard door feature a working steel lever lock (with key).  All drawers and doors are in good working condition. The top-left drawer features a working lock (with key), as does the left-hand cupboard door, with its own key. All other drawers feature faux (dummy) key escutcheons.  The backboards, drawer linings and floor are all original and in good condition.  Historical evidence of wood-worm to the drawer linings, which has been thoroughly treated – it is inevitable that any dresser which is nearly 300 years old will have some signs of woodworm.  The Welsh dresser base boasts the original polish; therefore, it has a fantastic depth of colour and patination displaying a lovely mellow golden brown oak colour.  This oak sideboard is solid in joint and ready to use.
