ITEM DESCRIPTION:

Here is an Absolutely Gorgeous & Mega-Ultra-Rare Vintage Mid Century c1949 Serigraph (Silkscreen) Depicting a Cubist Style Still Life of a Table with a Silhouette of a Black Rose, Bowl, Fruit, Jar & Floral Motif with the real title of, “La Rose Noire” (Translates: “The Black Rose”), after the original 1927 oil on canvas painting by the world-famous listed painter, collagist, draughtsman, printmaker and sculptor, ‘Georges Braque’ (French, 1882-1963) whose printed signature & date, ‘G. Braque, 27’, appears lower-left in the image corner area.

Painting History & Collection Info: Braque painted “The Black Rose” in 1927 which was purchased by the well-known art director, collector, designer & magazine publisher, Emily Hall Tremaine (American, 1908-1987). At the time Emily purchased The Black Rose, she was married to Baron Maximilian von Romberg (German-American, 1911-1938). He was handsome, she was beautiful. In the 1930s, they were the “it” couple, leading the extravagant lifestyle of the very rich in Montecito, California, which meant for Max fast cars, fast polo ponies, and fast airplanes. Fortunately for Emily, there were also more serious friends and relatives, including Chick Austin, director of the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, who encouraged her interest in art. “After a while, I decided I was really going to be brave and buy a picture which I loved and could not get out of my thought,” she recalled. She chose The Black Rose. Shorty after she purchased it (1937), Max was killed in a plane crash. From then on, Emily steered her life toward art collecting. It opened to Emily the possibility of making art more available to the public, in essence, sharing it. She came to believe that art should not be limited to the walls of a gallery, museum, or a collector’s home.

In regard to The Black Rose she stated, “I had owned it only a very short time when I received requests to loan it to one or two museums, and several friends who heard I had acquired the work telephoned me and asked to see it,” Emily told an interviewer. “To me there was never any joy in anything I could not share; and with this awakening—that the world was asking that it be shared—I think I became a collector.” A second marriage, to Adolph B. Spreckels, II (American, 1911-1961), the sugar heir, ended in divorce. In the mid-1940s, Emily moved to New York and met and married Burton Tremaine.

The Tremaine collection comprises more than 400 works by European and American artists, ranging from Braque, Picasso and Klee to such contemporary Americans as Michael Heizer, Neil Jenney and Robert Irwin. A major exhibition of some 150 objects appeared in 1984 at the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford. The Tremaines began dispersing their collection in 1980 and the 1958 painting Three Flags by Johns, was purchased by the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1981 for the record price at the time of $1 million. In November 1988 and November 1991, Christie's New York held auctions of the couple’s works, funds of which were used to establish the Emily Hall Tremaine Foundation (“The Black Rose” was sold in 1991, with $2 million estimate). Emily Hall Tremaine died on December 17, 1987 at her home in Madison, CT. (Sources: exhibitionsonthecusp site, Emily Hall Tremaine Foundation, New haven, CT, “The Black Rose: When Art Extends Beyond the Walls; The Emily Files”, By Kathleen Housley; Wikipedia, “Emily Hall Tremaine”; The New York Times, online digitized newspaper obituary, “Emily Hall Tremaine…”, December 17, 1987, Section B, Page 27; The Washington Post, online newspaper article, “Major Moderns For Sale”, By Judd Tully, June 7, 1991 (From New York June 6).)

Publisher & Serigraph Info: The publisher copyright, name & location, ‘Published and copyright Art-Lore Inc. New York City’, appears stamped lower-right in the outer margin corner (For: Art-Lore, Inc. [Publishers/Importers/Distributors, 1947-c2021]), and the inventory number, artist’s name & mis-written alternate title. ‘-071 Braque Flowed Tablecloth’[sic] (I believe supposed to be ‘Flowered’), is hand-written in pencil lower left respectively, but that title is incorrect for this piece, which is actually titled, “The Black Rose”. The Serigraph is on a nice heavier-weight light cream-colored wove paper stock.

Size & Condition: The size with wide margins is 23-1/16” x 35”, Image size is 16-9/16” x 30-1/8”. The Serigraph is in Excellent Rare+ condition for its vintage age with absolutely no color fade—beautiful rich color, tones & detail. The Serigraph has been in a drawer among other lithos & prints since it was purchased by the Meibohm family and hasn’t seen the light-of-day in all this time and is as ‘Mint’ as any collector could hope to find in its original never-framed condition. What a beauty and will look gorgeous all framed-up! No tears! No real or significant damage at all on this gorgeous serigraph, with the tiny & completely negligible exceptions of: Ultra-minimal (maybe a handful, if that) of very tiny & very faint foxing specks scattered here & there on the sheet which aren’t even worth mentioning since they aren’t even really visible unless you really, really hunt for them. Ultra-minimal (Only a handful or so) of extremely slight & small crescent-creases and a few small crinkle-creases scattered here & there in the image area which aren’t really that noticeable either (except mostly from behind) and certainly don’t detract from the image at all; Other minimal & very slight & small creases scattered here & there in the outer margin areas, some along a few outer margin edges, as well as some in a couple outer margin corners with associated tiny dog-ear bends in all four corners, and a little topical soiling (slightly grubby) here & there in a few small spots in the outer margin areas from being in a drawer this whole time amongst other lithos & prints, as well as a few small surface nicks in the outer margin areas and a few tiny colored printing ink-offset specks here & there in the outer margins—all outer margin issues are completely negligible since the outer margins can easily be trimmed off or matted & framed out; Negligible/no real or significant toning of the paper stock from age, especially amidst the light-cream color of the paper stock itself. This beautiful vintage mid century serigraph has never been framed which is always more desirable to collectors since it has never been exposed to older non-archival materials, matburn or lightfade.

EMAILING US: eBayers, at all costs, please use eBay's email system only (no outside email addresses) with any questions you may have. eBay's email system GUARANTEES we get your email and more importantly, that you get ours. A lot of servers in the last few years have started using newer SPAM filters, and there have been a lot of problems with GOOD emails not getting through correctly, and being returned as undeliverable. We have had numerous problems in the past communicating with our eBayers outside of eBay because of it.

COLLECTORS & DEALERS: Please DO NOT email us (inside or outside of eBay's email system) with any offers to stop an auction early. It would not be fair to the rest of the eBay Worldwide community if we did that. THE HIGHEST BIDDER -OR- HIGHEST OFFER WINS IT!!!!!

Thank you from the Staff at Meibohm Fine Arts, GOOD LUCK & HAPPY BIDDING!!!
