This classic medical textbook was first published in German in 1929, and this 4th English edition was translated by Ernest W Hey Groves from the 4th enlarged and revised German edition. Its author, Dr Lorenz Böhler (1885–1973), was Director of the Hospital for Accidents, Vienna. He made a worldwide impact on fracture treatment between the two world wars, based (as he wrote in the 1st edition, 1929) on 'the experience of 19 years in the treatment of more than 10,000 cases of fracture, the study of about 70,000 X-ray pictures, and the dissection of more than 300 fractures of the long bones, chiefly during the war [WW1].'
