Silver TEMBLADERA (CUP) or BERNEGAL. 82 SILVA, Salamanca, 18th century. With contrast marks – VERY, VERY RARE! Silver Spanish eighteenth century wine cup berengal or catavinos - wide and low bowl, slightly rounded to the base, following the typology of this glass in the Hispanic baroque. The two vertical handles on the mouth are also typical of this type, in this case in the form of an "S" sprocket with a profiled profile, with small tendrils. At the base of the piece are the three contrast marks and a burr mark on the base (flanking the contrast line), which place the realization of the piece in Salamanca (notice the bull). The city mark of a bull over a stone bridge is an abbreviated form of the arms of the city of Salamanca in Castille and Leon. "82/SILVA" is the mark of to a man named Silva, who held the position of contrast-marker in Salamanca after 1781. There is one others contrast mark and I guess is on a maker’s mark - GA?/CIA. It is very likely that his name was GARCIA - in the last photo it is surrounded by a circle. I guess Silva was a silversmith and contrast-marker, and the punch shown here seems to be dated in preserved works that have been dated by 1782. I guess It is that he held the position of contrast-marker in Salamanca by 1782 after Juan Ignacio Montero which was a silversmith and contrast-marker in Salamanca between 1758 and 1781. Silver cup made in silver and covered with a natural dark patina that has not been cleaned. The cup is in a completely authentic look - you get what you see in the pictures.
Both bernegalese or scrambles were very common typologies in 17th century Spanish Baroque silverware, and continued to be popular in the following century, mainly in centers far from important creative nuclei. Also known as catavinos, this type of drinking glasses were used on special occasions (ceremonies ...), hence their material and the decoration they have, were objects of civil use, although it was not strange or exceptional that they were donated or donated. Commissioned for use in churches or liturgical settings.
