It is now nearly half a century since Katherine Mansfield died. Since then a number of critical works have been written about her, none of which was felt by Katherine's lifelong friend, known to her as LM, to give a true picture of the woman behind the writer. At last LM has decided to break her silence to paint such a picture and to correct the many inaccuracies that have been written.

Meeting first as schoolgirls at the age of fourteen, they remained close friends until Katherine's death in 1923, and LM is thus the only person able to write of those early years. She watched Katherine's compulsion to discover herself and to live life to the full; she witnessed the disastrous first marriage, the coming of John Middleton Murry, the fight against illness-and the growth of Katherine Mansfield as an accomplished writer.
