1933 was the last year the Indianapolis 500 had Honorary Starters.  Turner was a fixture at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway serving as Honorary Referee and appearing in the Winners Circle as a representative of Champion Spark Plug.

Turner was the last civilian to receive the Distinguished Flying Cross, also awarded WW1 Victory Medal and Army of Occupation of Germany Medal.
