  • Beschreibung: Szene aus Oliver Goldsmith' Gedicht "The Deserted Village", das 1770 veröffentlicht wurde und einen sozialen Kommentar darstellt, welcher die Landflucht und das Streben nach übermäßigem Wohlstand verurteilt. Im Zentrum des Bildes steht ein Pastor, der sich über das Bett eines sterbenden Mannes lehnt und einen Segen gibt, während die Familie um ihn herum trauert: ein kleiner Junge, der sein Gesicht in die Gewänder des Klerikers gräbt, ein älterer Junge, der von der Gruppe links abgeschieden sitzt, sich nach vorne beugt und sein Gesicht bedeckt. Unter der Darstellung bezeichnet mit Titel, Dedikation an die Queen um das Wappen vom Verleger, 14 Zeilen von Goldsmith: 'Thus to relieve the wretched was his pride .. And his last fault'ring accents whisper'd praise. / Vide Goldsmith's Deserted Village' and "Painted by T. Stodhard / Engraved by S. Miller, under the inspection of J. K. Sherwin / London, Published Jany. 1st. 1791, by R. Wilkinson, No. 58 Cornhill".

  • Description: Scene from Oliver Goldsmith's poem "The Deserted Village", published in 1770, which is a social commentary condemning the rural exodus and the pursuit of excessive wealth. At the centre of the painting is a minister leaning over the bed of a dying man, giving a blessing as the family mourns around him: a young boy burying his face in the cleric's vestments, an older boy seated apart from the group to the left, leaning forward and covering his face. Inscribed below the image with title, dedication to the Queen around the coat of arms by the publisher, 14 lines by Goldsmith: 'Thus to relieve the wretched was his pride ... And his last fault'ring accents whisper'd praise. / Vide Goldsmith's Deserted Village' and 'Painted by T. Stodhard / Engraved by S. Miller, under the inspection of J. K.   • Condition: Very good condition. The image makes a very good impression. Excellent print quality; upper and lower centre with short marginal tear, corners of the sheet slightly discoloured and creased due to mounting; the sheet is slightly foxed due to its age.
