Widow's Mite - Judean Prutah (103-76 BC)

Bronze prutah or lepton of Alexander Janneaus, king of Judaea, minted ca. 100 BCE. The "widow’s mite" mentioned in the Gospels of Mark and Luke – Jesus’ parable about a poor widow who gave "two mites…all she had." quietly and without care to be observed. This was in contrast to the rich Pharisees who would give their gold and silver (only a small portion of what they had ) to the poor only when it could be observed by others and bring them honor or acclaim.
