History:

Maison Worth established in 1856, as French fashion house, by Englishman, Charles Frederick Worth (1826 – 1885). He was the first couturier to use live models, considered today as the father of haute couture.

Charles Frederick as well as his sons did not care about anything but high fashion.

Only the third generation (Jean Charles and Jacques Worth) recognized the great potential of perfume business. They founded Les Parfums Worth in 1924.

In collaboration with famous perfumer Maurice Blanchet and genius Rene Lalique, who designed and manufactured flacons, Les Parfums Worth launched over 20 fragrances between 1924 and 1947.

Worth launched first five perfumes with names combining in a passion mantra.

Dans la Nuit (1924), Vers le Jour (1925), Sans Adieu (1925), Je Reviens (1929), Vers Toi (1933) - "within the night” – “towards the day” – “without farewell” – “I’m coming back” –“to you".

Launched:

1929 (1932 in US). After the closure of the Paris couture house in 1956, Les Perfumes Worth was bought by Société Maurice Blanchet. It was sold in 1992 to David Reimer and became a part  of International Classic Brands. It was later acquired by Lenthéric in 1999 and is now part of Shaneel Enterprises Ltd.

There have been several reformulations since 1992 due to few ownership transfers, resulting in the modern cheap fragrance with the same name but nothing to do with original.

Perfumer:

Maurice Blanchet.

Flacon designer:

Mark Lalique.

Odor profile:

Complex, well balanced, persistent aldehydic floral fragrance, reflecting languor and extravagance of the “belle époque”. Initially fresh but melancholy, it develops into spicy floral heart, followed by powdery oriental base.

EDC is more dry, while bath oil is more sweet than perfume.

Main notes to mention aldehydes, bergamot, neroli, violet, orange blossom, lavender, jonquil, hyacinth, clove, jasmine, rose, ylang-ylang, carnation, heliotrope, orris, sandalwood, incense, benzoin, patchouli, vetiver, tonka bean, musk, vanilla.

Dating clues:

1. Rene Lalique’s factory at Wingen-sur-Moder was blocked by Nazis from September 1939 till May 1945, a few days before his death. Mark Lalique, the son, took over the business. He re-opened Wingen sur Moder glass factory.in the end 1945. Mold signature “R. Lalique” changed to “Lalique”.

2. In early 1940s Worth started to mold volume in oz on flacon bottom, marking volume on the box both in liter (stopped in the late 1940s) and oz.

3. In 1945 Worth introduced the new package with all info printed on the box in two stiles. Therefore, this item presumably is packed in old fashioned box with volume marked in oz. and liters.
