Child Staffordshire Miniature Green Two Swans with Cupid Cup & Saucer, c 1840
Reference: Lorraine Punchard, ‘200 Years of Playtime Pottery & Porcelain,’ p 23, bottom. The Transferware Collectors Club database: “The central panel seems to show a cherub hitching a ride in the water from a pair of swans. The pattern name, however, may display a deeper meaning. As swans mate for life and are traditional symbols of love and fidelity, the cherub could well be Cupid himself, and the swans symbolic of the voyage through life taken by faithful and loving couples.”
This is a scarce miniature child’s cup and saucer transfer printed in green that was part of a child’s tea set to use as an instructional tool for learning manners and etiquette. The edges of the cup and saucer are scalloped. The vignette of the scene is framed with an egg and dart design followed with a wide border of flowers and seaweed. This is a very romantic design of two swans with Cupid swimming beside them with one leg out of the water. The swan was a favorite of Venus, Goddess of Love, and Cupid was her son. There is no insignia or marks, the maker is unknown; the pattern name is ‘Voyagers.’

Please excuse the white light glare reflections in the photos. This scarce cup and saucer are in excellent condition, with some light crazing consistent with age. Stilt and firing marks may appear sporatically that are typical of manufacturing in this period. This cup and saucer display beautifully. Offered as is and as found.
