  • Description: Map of Frankfurt with the associated territories, marked in red. Frankfurt became a free imperial city in the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation in 1372. It retained its independence until 1806, when Napoleon assigned it to the Principality of Aschaffenburg and it was then absorbed into the Grand Duchy of Frankfurt in 1810.
