LUSS, FROM HEATHER ISLAND.
This village is situated on the west shore of Loch Lomond, near the mouth of the glen of the same name, and at the base of a hill called Bendhu, 2,108 feet in height. In 1850 it only contained a few cottages, or rather huts; but about that time began to be rebuilt, and has now many cottages with lovely gardens, a pier, and good hotel, and is a favourite resort of anglers and tourists. The situation is very beautiful, being opposite some of the most picturesque islands in the loch. Nearly all this side of Lomond belongs to Sir James Colquhoun, whose residence of ' Rossdhu" is about two miles from Luss. The former baronet was drowned in the loch in 1873, under distressing circumstances, his boat sinking through being overladen with the proceeds of a deer-shooting excursion.
