HENLEY REGATTA.
Henley-on-Thames is rather a pretty town as seen from the bridge, best known for most of the summer as a pleasant boating and river resort; but once a year, during the far-famed Henley Regatta, it is a scene of intense excitement, when inns, lodging-houses, private houses, scores of house-boats, and tents in the meadows, are crowded with visitors; and the crowd of boats on both banks to watch the various events, baffles description. Not only boating men, but the rank and fashion of London, go to witness a tournament in which so many take part; for not only the universities, but all the best amateur oarsmen compete for either the Grand Challenge Cup, the Ladies' Plate, or the Diamond Sculls. The race for the latter was being rowed on the occasion of our photograph.
