WINDSOR CASTLE.
This is the most truly royal residence belonging to the Crown of Engiand, and there is none to surpass it anywhere. It stands on a hill overlooking the beautiful Thames Valley, and all its outlines are singularly picturesque. It was a fortress as well as a palace, and the noble round tower which crowns it is, in fact, a keep. The stately chapel of St. George, though it gives title to no Bishop, is an ecclesiastical centre of English life in its own way, and does possess its dean, and canons, and a complete collegiate establishment. The keep was built by William the Conqueror, other monarchs adding in succession down to George IV. No building illustrates in such continuity the history of England, whose monarchs from the time of Henry Beauclerc have dwelt almost uninterruptedly within its walls.
