GOLFING LINKS, ST. ANDREWS.
It is golf which has revived St. Andrews from the position of a neglected little country town, which it had become in spite of its historical importance, to that of a favourite watering-place and summer resort. The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews is the acknowledged parliament of the noble game, and was founded in 1754. It holds great meetings in May and October every year. The Club House and celebrated Links are west of the town, on the sea-shore, the links having a stretch of about i mile to the river Eden. They consist of a sandy plain, with scant herbage here and there, and there are nine holes out and nine in, the whole round being over 4 miles. The average score for fair players is 90 strokes, the championship record 72 strokes. The Club House is accessible to visitors with proper introductions.
