DRUMMOND CASTLE AND GROUNDS.
This Castle, about three miles from Crieff, was founded in 1491 by the first Lord Drummond, and subsequently descended in the female line to the Willoughby d'Eresby family, It was visited by James IV. and twice by Queen Mary; subsequently it suffered much from Cromwell, and finally was almost demolished in 1745 by the Jacobite Duchess of Perth. Of the old Castle only the fine square tower, now fitted up as an armoury, remains, the rest being modern. The beautiful gardens are amongst the most celebrated in Great Britain, lying on three terraces formed out of the slope under the Castle, and treated in three different styles. They are. specially noteworthy for the magnificent conifers, evergreens, and yews, dealt with in quaint Continental fashion, and interspersed freely with statues and fountains.
