THE LINKS OF THE FORTH, FROM STIRLING CASTLE.
The landscape visible from Stirling Castle, 420 feet above the sea, is magnificent for prospect and variety. That here shown is the view to the north-east. Down below are the "links" of Forth, proverbial for fertility in saying and song, and the double-horseshoe bends of the river, so tortuous that the 5 1/2 miles from Alloa to Stirling become on the river 12 1/2 miles. The Forth is crossed by two bridges and the railway bridge, and in the background, close to Causewayhead, stands up the hill called Abbey Craig, 362 feet in height, with the Wallace monument on the top, erected in 1861-9 at a cost of £16,000. From this latter spot also a splendid view across the'reaches of the Forth to Stirling Castle is obtained, while behind is the fine range of the Ochils.
