1940s Black Floral and Net Tilt Hat by Le Monier.

This beautiful 1940s tilt hat is a perfect example of WWII era hat trends! These flowered styles were sometimes called flower pots.

This hat is in very good condition, the flowers have softened but have retained most of their color and the netting is crisp. Both easily perk up with a little steam as needed.

The hoop worn at the back of the head that helps to balance the hat (see photos), has an insert of the same netting, giving a gorgeous lattice effect.

A narrow bow of folded grosgrain ribbon sits where the hat and hoop join.

In total the decorated crown of hat is approximately 7” diameter, hat base is about 4 1/2” diameter , and netted ring is 5 1/4” diameter .

The original label reads “Le Monier, Reproduction” and is size 22, though considering the style, this will fit any size.

The term ‘reproduction’ on this label does not mean that this is a modern copy. It is most definitely a 1940s original. It merely means that multiples of the same style were created, and/or was a reproduction inspired by a popular designer hat that season.

A bit of history:

Worn at a ‘tilt’; slightly forward on the head and occasionally a bit to one side depending on the hairdo, these were all the rage between 1940 and 1945.

At a time when food, materials for clothing, and much more was rationed to a bare minimum during WWII, women had to get creative expressing their personal style through clothing. Even nylon stockings became unavailable so that nylon could go toward the war effort. Hats were a way to combat this, and millinery (hat making) supplies were readily available!
