During WWII, officers were responsible for purchasing their uniforms, and this great coat exemplifies the type of private purchase items officers would seek out. While regulations dictated standard issue garments, officers often opted for privately purchased trench coats like this one, as evidenced by period photographs and similar to the ones worn by German U-boat officers designed by Hugo Boss in the 1930s.

This particular example features a multi-panel dark brown horsehide leather construction, intricate a double yoke to the back, and is fully lined throughout with moleskin. It is a long-length trench coat with a lay-down and stand-up collar and a double buckle (Astor stamped) fastening to the front. An internal body belt is inside the coat to hold it against the body. This trench coat has two side pockets with cover flaps and internal pockets. The sleeves are straight-cut with epaulette-style cuffs and original football-style buttons, adding to the streamlined appearance.
