DINGWALL
This must once have been an important place, for the name (of Scandinavian, not Celtic, origin) denotes the Vale of the Ting, or Norse Parliament. It stands near the mouth of the River Peffery, at the head of Cromartie Firth, and is the centre of much summer traffic, tourists branching off here for the spa at Strathpeffer, and also for the west coast and Hebrides.' There is ,a good harbour in the mouth of the river, and a small shipping trade has latterly been on the increase. An obelisk on the north of the town, 57 feet high, to the memory of the first Earl of Cromartie, was thrown greatly out of the perpendicular by an earthquake in 1816. The view is taken looking to the north-west, towards Ben Wyvis.
