KING'S COLLEGE AND CHAPEL, CAMBRIDGE.
Even more than Oxford, Cambridge is completely dominated by University life. The collegiate system of corporate colleges, like federal States in a Union, which marks off the two great English Universities from all others in the world, was originated by Walter de Merton at Oxford; his foundation there being closely followed in Peter-house, the first college of the seventeen at Cambridge. The chapel of King's College, shown in the view, is the special boast of Cambridge, with its marvellous fretted roof of stone, fine carved pinnacles, and great windows filled with stained glass. The Senate House must also be mentioned, where many examinations are conducted and all degrees conferred: and the Round, or St. Sepulchre's Church, with a Norman circular nave, is one of the only four "Temple" Churches remaining in England.
