FURNESS ABBEY
The ruins of this once splendid abbey stand on the peninsula between Morecambe Bay and the mouth of the Duddon, close to the railway station; the line going through the precincts, and the station hotel standing on the ancient place of the abbot's house. In spite of the invasion of the iron road, however, the site is still a pretty glen between wooded slopes. Much of the abbey is only crumbling ruin, but portions, including the church, are still in fair preservation, and are sedulously cared for by the Duke of Devonshire, to whom the estate now belongs. The noble church—for it is 300 feet long—is of rather severe simplicity, but the effect is fine; the chapter house and refectory are the chief other portions remaining. The abbey was mostly built in the twelfth century.
