BRANDENSTEIN - STS-32 with 4 Tomato SEEDS that had been floating in outer space
for almost 6 years to test the effects of radiation on biological tissue!
These Tomato SEEDS were flown in space for
nearly six years aboard NASA's Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF). These
seeds were exposed to cosmic radiation longer than any other space-based NASA
experiment involving biological tissue since the inception of
NASA. 
These seeds were sent to space
aboard the Space Shuttle “Challenger” in 1984 as part of NASA’s Long Duration
Exposure Facility (LDEF) project. LDEF carried many experiments from different
disciplines, among them ParkSeed’s tomato seeds, in order to study the effects
of deep space. They remained in space for almost six years, until the “Columbia”
Shuttle Mission STS-32 returned the seeds to Earth Jan. 20,
1990.

Daniel C. Brandenstein is the
Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of United Space Alliance.
He is a former Naval Aviator, test pilot and NASA astronaut, who flew four Space
Shuttle missions. He also served as Chief of the Astronaut Office from 1987 to
1992.

STS-32 Mission STS-32R was the 33rd mission of NASA's
Space Shuttle program, and the ninth launch of Space Shuttle Columbia. Launched
on 9 January 1990, it marked the first use of Launch Pad A at Kennedy Space
Center's Complex 39 since 1986; it also marked the first use of Mobile Launcher
Platform-3 in the Space Shuttle program.
