The PAW PAW is North America’s largest native fruit. Cold Hardy -30C. Perfectly surviving Canadian winter . Zone 4-9

Paw Paw is a small tree that produces hanging clusters of mango shaped fruit ( somewhat like banana) that matures its fruit in late October in our Canadian climate. The fruit has sweet, yellow, custard-like flesh described as having a “deliciously tropical” mango-banana-kiwi -pineapple flavour. Latest research is showing that the Paw Paw fruit is loaded with health promoting nutrients...you would have to eat a banana, an apple and an orange( all 3) to get the same nutrient content as one!

With its large drooping leaves and dramatic purple flowers in spring, the Paw Paw tree has great ornamental appeal as well.

Plant TWO PAWPAWS for cross pollination and hand pollinate the flowers to maximize cropping in cold springs.

Sun Requirements: Partial shade for small seedlings under 3 years old . Pawpaws are an understory tree and the young trees need shade to survive and thrive. Full sun will kill baby pawpaw trees!

Older trees do fine in the sun, so if you don’t have a shady spot, you can build your saplings a simple shelter for their first 3 years.

Soil Preference: Moist, but well draining. Rich soil.

Plant stratified seeds in pots or a nursery bed using standard potting soil. Heat mats are NOT required & can hinder germination!

Germinate at +22 C. . Sprouts in 30-60 days. Cool temperate during this period will delay germination. Keep moist. Use deep ( 4-5 gallon) pots as it puts down a very long tap root. Root stunted plants do not do well. We recommend growing 1 year in a large pot ( singly or all together , but grow better in a communal) then transplant out . Ideal, baggie sow and transplant those into a communal growing pot for a year before decanting into deep tree pots . Prefer - semi sun , well draining moist humus rich orchard soils. Not reliably self fertile . Super nutritious 8 oz. fruits. Mango / banana / pineapple taste , custard texture. Delicious! Very Rare !

* Please note that you may not see sprouts for a while. The plant will send down a long long taproot first. Once that is established it will work on growing above the ground. The first leave will appear in late July or into August

- Protect young tree seedlings from slugs, cutworms & rodents. Slugs especially can eat primary leaves as soon as they come up, so be vigilant!

Natural DIY solution : One part of household Ammonia + 9 parts of water . Mix well , using watering can, sprinkle solution around plant .

You can also use coarse sand . Sprinkle around your seedlings 1/2 inch deep . Slags hate sand .
