Publisher Description

Fans of Christine Holubec-Jackson first met Glia Girl, the fun, wise character derived from "Glial cell," a type of cell found in the brain, in "The Adventures of Glia Girl: When Stroke Strikes," the first installment of the series
In this sequel, The Adventures of Glia Girl: Ouch!! Glia Girl and the kids, Angelina, Oliver, and Manuel, continue another exciting learning adventure. In this new adventure fittingly titled, The Adventures of Glia Girl: Ouch!! Glia Girl returns after Manuel hits his head.
Her purpose specifically is to:

  • Teach the kids the meaning of a concussion
  • Explain to them in simple terms what a concussion does to the body

Excerpt from the book:
"The inside of your head is filled with liquid to help keep your brain safe, just like the white around an egg yolk...Why did Manuel's mom take him to the doctor?" Asked Oliver. When Manuel's head hit the goal post his brain moved around inside the liquid (Ouch!!)." Glia Girl explained. [As a result], this may cause a concussion and make you feel yucky. A doctor will make sure Manuel gets the care he needs."

Review

Spreads Knowledge and Heightens Awareness
"Glia Girl returns and this time she helps her friends learn about concussions. As a retired Nurse Practitioner and Grandma to two very active boys, I am grateful to Glia Girl and Christine Holubec-Jackson for spreading knowledge and heightening awareness of this invisible but significant brain injury."

Tricky Brain Things
"Christine has outdone herself yet again by crafting a narrative that is both engaging for young brains and provides a clear and sensitive explanation of tricky brain things! Concussions can be scary things, and Glia Girl gives explanations that deal with the aspects of these brain injuries that can be the most difficult for kids to understand, particularly for an injury that can so often be invisible. Brava!

Simple Explanation of a Complex Topic
"I am a family physician in rural Alberta. "Ouch" is a delightful, simplistic story explaining the complex topic of concussion. The use of a story and simple visuals explain the mechanism of injury, signs and management of concussion very well. The Adventures of Glia Girl: Ouch!! will definitely bring awareness of concussion to the target audience of children and also to anyone else who reads it. Bravo!"

Easy to Follow, Excellent Read!
"I read through the book a couple of times and I must say this book is excellent. As a dad, Safety Professional, coach, and local minor hockey & ball board member, I have to say this is the easiest way I have yet come across to communicate concussions to kids. Basically, I reviewed the book with my son and a couple of kids from our hockey team and the feedback they gave me presented gains from the book. Coming from my son, who usually fights us to read books, he was able to detail the content back to me and was able to speak to what concussion is and related to the comparisons mentioned. Additionally, the book flows through nicely and is easy to follow. Overall, this is an excellent read and way to educate children about concussions and the importance of protecting their brains."
