SCARBOROUGH: THE BAY AND SPA
The Queen of northern watering-places" is not inaptly named, for it would be hard to find a finer situation even amongst the grand scenery of the north-east coast. A bold headland projects into the sea, from which the cliffs recede on both sides, leaving two fine bays of clean bright sand. On this headland stands the ruined castle, which in years gone by named the place as Scar-burgh. A little back, and down the slope of the hill, are the old church and the older part of the town. The modern watering-place has spread more into the bays, and first into that one here shown. On this, the South Bay, is the Spa, to which Scarborough at first owed its fame, which, however, rests now far more upon its fine situation and unusually bracing sea-breezes.
